Chair of the Jury’s Statement | 2026
– Atlantic International Youth Art Festival
As an art educator, artist, and Chair of the Jury for the Atlantic International Youth Art Festival, it is a privilege to once again engage with the voices and visions of young artists navigating an increasingly interconnected world. This year’s festival marks a meaningful shift in focus, centering on Chinese diasporic youth from across the globe and inviting us to consider, through art, what it means to carry cultural memory, identity, and imagination across borders.
In the context of globalization, migration is no longer simply a physical movement from one place to another. It is an ongoing cultural condition—one shaped by continuity and transformation, belonging and difference. The works presented this year offer a nuanced reflection on these shared experiences. While the number of submissions is slightly smaller than in previous years, the depth of thought, sensitivity, and conceptual clarity evident in each piece remains striking. Quantity has given way to concentration, and with it, a remarkable level of artistic intention.
What distinguishes this year’s submissions is not only their engagement with pressing social issues, but also the artists’ thoughtful return to cultural inheritance. Many young artists draw deliberately from traditional and ethnic visual languages, reinterpreting them through contemporary lenses. These works demonstrate that tradition is not static or nostalgic; rather, it is a living source of inquiry—one that can be challenged, reshaped, and expanded. Through this process, the artists extend the boundaries of artistic expression while grounding their work in cultural consciousness and emotional authenticity.
Although in-person masterclasses have not taken place this year, we look forward to connecting with participants through upcoming online masterclasses. These virtual spaces will allow for deeper dialogue, shared reflection, and sustained exchange—further strengthening an international platform where young artists can learn from one another and grow together.
I would also like to extend my sincere appreciation to art educators, mentors, and community leaders whose dedication continues to shape the creative development of young people. Their commitment to arts education plays a vital role in fostering critical thinking, resilience, and cultural awareness—qualities that are clearly reflected in the work we see today.
Art has always served as a bridge—between past and present, self and society, culture and world. It is my hope that this year’s festival continues to nurture that role, encouraging dialogue across generations and geographies, and offering young artists the confidence to articulate their place within a global cultural landscape.
Thank you to all the participants for your courage, insight, and creativity. Your work reminds us not only of where we come from, but of the possibilities that lie ahead.
